The 7 Weirdest Bars in Vienna (Ex-Brothels & Secret Doors)

Seven of the weirdest bars in Vienna: a former brothel café, a speakeasy behind a vending machine, a church-themed bar, an underground crypt and more, with addresses and opening hours.

Vienna does grand coffee houses and polished cocktail bars very well. This list is for the other kind of night out: a former brothel café that never redecorated, a speakeasy you enter through a vending machine, a church-themed bar behind a painting and a bar with a doorbell instead of a menu.

All seven are in Vienna’s 6th to 9th districts or the 15th, so you can easily string a few together in one night. They’re ranked by our completely unscientific weirdness rating.

1. Tanzcafé Jenseits: A former brothel café

Red-lit bar at Tanzcafé Jenseits in Vienna with dark brocade wallpaper and crystal chandeliers

Tanzcafé Jenseits started life as a brothel and contact café, and it never really redecorated: red lighting, brocade walls, plush booths, a tiny dance floor and a trashy, funky soundtrack. Even Vienna’s tourism board calls it particularly offbeat.

2. Fitzcarraldo Speakeasy: Enter through a vending machine

Fitzcarraldo speakeasy bar in Vienna with velvet bar stools, dark herringbone tiles and hanging plants

You get in through what looks like a drinks vending machine. Behind it is a tropical Art Deco bar, and some cocktails arrive in shells or matryoshka dolls.

3. The Chapel Bar: Behind a painting

Dimly lit bar counter with bar stools at The Chapel Bar in Vienna

Hidden inside another restaurant, The Chapel Bar sits behind an entrance disguised as a painting. The whole place is church-themed, from the biblically named drinks to the deliberately sacrilegious speakeasy styling.

4. Krypt: A cocktail bar in underground vaults

krypt. is a subterranean cocktail dungeon: you head underground into huge exposed-brick vaults with almost no natural light. It’s often described as somewhere between a bar and a club.

5. Donautechno: Techno and an indoor sausage stand

Vaulted room at Donautechno in Vienna with colourful light projections on the walls and a Würstelstand-style booth

One of Vienna’s strangest rooms. Behind an anonymous metal door is an enormous dark vaulted space with constantly changing giant projections, underground techno and, inexplicably, an indoor Würstelstand (sausage stand).

6. Tür 7: Ring the doorbell, no menu

Unmarked entrance of Tür 7 bar in Vienna at night, with only a number 7 beside the door

From the street, almost nothing tells you a bar exists here. You ring a doorbell and someone lets you in. There’s traditionally no regular cocktail menu: the bartenders make drinks around what you tell them you like. Some visitors even mention being asked to swap into slippers.

7. Puff: A bar in a former red-light venue

Corner entrance of Puff bar in Vienna with a yellow graffiti-covered facade

The name isn’t subtle: Puff is German slang for a brothel. The bar is in former red-light premises, and the design leans into that seedy past rather than hiding it. Very dark, strange and deliberately provocative.
